I’ve been loving so much lately, little bits here and there, nothing enormous or life-changing but little gems that have been good finds or tiny treasures.
Here are 4 Fun Things I’m Loving Lately:
So, I don’t know if I want to say I’m a yoga-pant aficionado, connoisseur….expert judge….but I do wear these things daily, have been through a solid decade of brands and have spent a small fortune on the things. I’ve never worn the very colorful LuLaRoe (and people do rave and look cute in LuLaRoe) and I’ve never worn LuLu Lemon. But I’ve tried many of the other usual suspects: Nike, Adidas, Reebock, Kate Spade, Gap, Old Navy, Target, Athleta and Lucy. My favorite, go-to brand for about 8 years now has been Zella, at Nordstrom. Those are some powerhouse yoga pants. I had a pair for about 8 years, which finally had a hole in the butt and was wearing through to the point of being see-through, and it was painful to throw them out.
That said, Zella is now going all high-waisted with their pants, and they’re constantly out of stock on Nordstrom’s site, so when my kids dragged me into an Under Armour store a few weeks ago, I decided to at least try a few pair on, since it was an outlet, and the leggings were around $40/pair instead of Zella’s $54 or LuLu Lemon’s $90.
Readers: these are the best yoga pants I’ve ever worn. They are soft but offer full coverage. They’re long enough and have a wide enough waist band that I don’t (how shall I say this?) spill over. They wash well and wear well. No sagging or pilling so far. I love them. I got some coupons for more shopping (of course), and I’ll be buying more. A good pair of yoga pants is worth a lot.
I read in a book or an article or something, that peanut butter is out and almond butter is in. I know, I sound all Paleo here. But….I used to eat a ton of peanut butter. I have noticed my stomach feels much better when I don’t eat my all-time favorite snack: an apple with 2 tablespoons of peanut butter.
I know. I’m sad too.
I hate almond butter. I have tried it many times over the years. It tastes burnt, and I don’t like the texture (which is odd because peanut butter is so similar). Anyway, I saw a note about almond butter that said raw almond butter is really the way to go. Apparently, the roasting process is dodgy, so it’s best to consume only raw almond butter.
I kind of like a restriction that requires me to find an obscure item at a high-end grocery store, so I kept this nugget in the back of my mind, figuring it would cost me $57 to find out raw almond butter is as rancid as roasted.
Readers: it is fabulous.
It is sweet and soft and lovely. I cannot describe how much better raw almond butter is than its roasted, dodgy, rancid cousin.
They shouldn't even be related.
I get the packets by Artisana. They pan out to the same price, maybe slightly more, than the jar, but then I don’t have to deal with stirring a jar of condensed almonds and oil. Also, it kind of limits me to a normal portion size. I eat a half of an apple and one packet.
Seriously, so good.
So, this isn’t necessarily ‘fun,’ but it’s a necessary, on-point recommendation. I get cold sores. They’re bad. I’ve noticed lately a lot of people suffering with cold sores. Maybe it’s the drier weather or the change of seasons, but cold sores seem to abound.
I’ve tried everything - prescription medication (which is awesome) and over-the-counter gels, creams, salves, etc. I’ve tried homeopathic remedies and taken L-Lysine supplements.
For preventing cold sores, prescription meds work best. But if I get one (because I don’t take the meds daily), I use Bactine. Seriously. It works. I know it sounds weird, but a friend told me about this little trick, and now Bactine is our family’s go-to for mouth sores. I have a cold sore today. It’s small but still….ugh.
I just spray Bactine on a q-tip or my finger and press it to the sore. Then, I toss the q-tip or wash my hands thoroughly.
The Bactine is less than $10. You can get it at any grocery store or pharmacy. It lasts a long time. And it works. When I use Bactine, my cold sores are much less dramatic, shorter-lived and less painful.
If you get cold sores or have a child who gets them, it’s worth a try.
Finally - this is super fun. My sister turned me on to this YouTube channel for great Zumba. The sound isn’t the best quality, but the music is good, and the dancing is really fun. I love this woman. She’s got tons of videos, and I find myself really looking forward to the workouts.
I have a Jazzercise membership, and while I love it, I don’t have almost 2 hours for a workout. Between the drive time, wait time and more drive time, I spend about 1 hour and 45 minutes working out. It’s just too much. YouTube videos really save me when I need a solid 30 to 40 minute workout mid-day. I love working out at home because it saves time, saves money and is the most flexible option. With YouTube videos, I feel like I get the same quality as if I was in a gym class. I’d like to work with a trainer one day, but until that happens, YouTube is filling the void. Danielle’s videos are my new go-to for fun cardio.
That’s it for me. I’m off to get some school work done. I’ve got one sick child home today and another home for parent-teacher conferences, which means I had to cancel ballet. Sigh. #momlife
But…I get a day with kiddos, no major illnesses, a happy dog sitting beside my bed and the sense of leisure that comes when you can’t go out and bop around town. That’s a perk. :)
