Greetings everyone! I know…it’s been ages. I’ve been up to my elbows in psychology theories, human development, soccer, ballet, and….perhaps most important of all…storm prepping!
With Hurricane Florence tapping at our screens, we’ve been stocking up on high-end brie (I got Saint Andre), wine, gluten-free crackers, Italian ice cups and M&Ms. We also got plywood for windows, cleaned out the gutters and have jug-upon-jug of water.
In sad news. I had to cancel a much-awaited trip west for a wedding, a little solo journey into the Colorado mountains to see old friends and drink wine and celebrate. I’m pretty bummed. I haven’t gotten to the part in my counseling theory books that describes how best to deal with such feelings yet, so I’ll just have to realize that life happens and sometimes a solo-trip (complete with rented Audi 5 SUV) gets interrupted.
As I am reading and studying (seriously….it takes me hours a day; I even had to drop a course), I see all of these fascinating tidbits I want to write about here on the blog. Have you ever spent time with someone who constantly reads self-help and psychology books, and they can’t stop telling you all about what they’re learning?
I know. You’re excited.
Seriously, though, why did I not study psychology in undergrad? I’ve never been so engaged in my learning, so enthralled in the subject matter and so ready to absorb information. I feel grateful to be coming to this at the second-half of my life, when I have a wider perspective from which to apply what I’m learning and when it all probably makes much more real-life sense to me. If I’d studied this at 20, I’m not sure child development would have been so eye-opening to me (though it likely would have made me a ‘better’ mother), and I don’t know that I could fully appreciate something like Jung’s theory that we come into our truer selves in the second half of life.
So, that is all to say: I’m just loving this.
I had to re-word that a tiny bit so I didn’t sound like the McDonald’s jingle.
On top of school, I’ve been having job interviews to work with a human trafficking/sexual assault/domestic violence organization, and I’m finalizing the details of writing a monthly column for a local magazine.
It’s been busy ‘round here!
That’s my pre-storm update. It’s amazing how quickly life happens and suddenly weeks have passed and you miss your sweet blog.
I hope everyone is safe, on high ground, healthy and having strong coffee to start the day.
Happy Thursday (is it Thursday?)
