I used to balk at Stephen King back when I was a creative writing major and thought there was 'serious' literature and then everything else.
Hahahaha. Bless my heart.
I read King's book On Writing last year - well, I read 3/4 of his book, which is par for the course with me. Why do I stop reading when the going gets good?
Well, don't let me go down that rabbit's hole.
On Writing is probably my favorite book on writing, so far. I've not read Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird. People rave.
This is all to say I no longer do the internal eye roll when I hear people wax poetic about Stephen King, or any other writer for that matter. There are many types of writing, many genres, and if Outlander taught me anything (other than I probably should have married a man in a kilt), it's that great writing isn't limited to any particular box.
This quote, of King's, only speaks to that point:
Doesn't it make you think what if?
What if I'd studied harder and spent less time at the Midnight Rodeo, drinking Coor's light and waiting for a boy to ask me to dance?
What if I'd listened to all the people who told me the Peace Corps was a waste of time and I should be staying in Dallas, building a 'career' and making money?
What if I'd had only one child or three children or no children at all?
What if I'd worn sunscreen and not believed tinted moisturizer had me covered?
What if I'd been raised Catholic, Baptist, Buddhist or Muslim rather than Mormon?
What if we'd never left the church?
What if I'd learned to properly blow-out and round brush my hair at 23 instead of 38?
What if I'd married the first man who'd asked me? (no...no....let's not what if that)
What if I'd never given up my career and tried to do international development work and be a mother?
So many what ifs.
I wonder what I'll think in 10 years or even 20. I'll be (fingers crossed) 62 then. I'll probably think a similar version of what I already think, which if I sum it all up into one neat little sentence looks something like this:
What if I hadn't wasted so much time on __________, or _____________ or even _______________.
Just fill in the blanks.
I hope everyone is having the best Saturday possible with an even brighter Sunday on the horizon. I'm off to the Derby Gala tonight, to which I'll be wearing a comfortable Ace & Jig dress sans hat. I know.
